Tucker - The Man and His Dream

From the movie, "Tucker - The Man and His Dream," what elements of management were observed. Think of the chapters we have covered in this class (Management Functions: Planning, Organizing, Controlling, Leading, and Evaluating; Leadership Styles; Marketing Strategies; Legal Issues; and Organizational Structures).

Tucker showed little planning when starting his company. It was almost on the spot plans. He didn't even a prototype car to show to people. He made a junk which then lead to his trial. The orginazation was on the spot also but he got everything in order in time to represent himself and the company. He was a great leader and everyone looked up to him. He had to give up some of the power for the financial backing of the company, but overall everyone still looked to him for his opinions on his car and company. He ended up losing his company from his poor orginazational and planning skills in the beginning of this business venture. He almost went to jail for these skills he overlooked.

Tucker was a risky guy, but a good manager and innovater. He planned his car and organized what he and his team need to do inorder to reach their goal. Also, tucker was a democratic leader because he took advice from other people in his business.Their strategy for marketing entailed using the magazines in their favor. Because everyone seemed to believe what was in the magazines. Lastly, Tucker ran into some fraud problems. He said he had something before he actually had it, eventually getting him into legal trouble.

Tucker was a marketing genius. He created a car that everyone would buy. However, his planning was poor. When he gave up control of the company for financial backing, that eventually did him in. The big three obviously did not want another competitor, and did everything in their power to stop him. His unability to lead and control the company effectively and stay out of legal troubles prevented his company to countinue production.

While Tucker had an innovative idea and a big dream, he didnt exactly understand the right way to go about his business. He was very unorgainized and was often running around at the last minute, trying to pull together a team and a product. He was a good boss to his employees used the theory y form of management to run his company which helped make improvements to his car. His lack of knowledge of the legalities of big businesses lead him into some legal trouble which he didnt always handle as well as he could have. This movie really did show that with enough luck and determination a person has the ability to sell their product along with big corporations.

Tucker's management stragety had many different aspects. He assumed that everything will go smoothly and correctly. His autocratic leadership involved everything having to go his way. Even though he accepted a contract so he could clear his financial problem, the company he signed with decided to change his design which Tucker wouldn't agree with. He also tried to advertise something that did not exist yet which isn't the smartest thing to do because he couldn't make the advertised car come into existance before the big promotional showing. The company Tucker signed with was trying to take over the company by saying Tucker would not sell the advertised car even though that was not Tucker's intentsion. He needs to make sure everything is in order before he says anything about what he is about to do.

Preston Tucker had a great idea. What he failed to do was surround himself with people who wanted the same success as he did. He didn't plan well either: he had no prototype, sold his car to dealerships before it was even in production, and got a loan for the plant way too early. He would have been in a lot better shape if he didnt rush his plan. Because of his impatience he missed out on a couple aspects of business that ended up being his downfall.

Preston Tucker, in my opinion, was a great inventor and an extremely knowledgable man. He desgined his car, he hired a few men to help him perfect his design, and he began to manufacture the car. He was very understanding and listened to the ideas of all his employees and worked together with all of them to make the car the best it could be. He ran into a few hardships along the way, but with the help of other people in the business, he was able to overcome the challenges he encountered to perfect his dream. If he made one mistake, I would say that it would be letting some top executives into his dream. He had a dream to help the American people, whereas the executives could care less, they just wanted to make money. When they saw that his idea was a threat to their corporations, they did whatever they could to put him out of business. Although in the end he lost his plant and had to discontinue production, he still proved to the American people that he had the right to manufacture and through our free enterprise system here in America, even the little inventor could produce his dream and share it with the American people, and no one can take that away.

Mr. Tucker was a theory Y leader. All of his employ's have a huge interest in making the cars. Mr. Tucker listens to his workers and takes a group orientated democratic view toward running his business. He had great ideas and a good product. However, he went about pursuing his goals way too quickly and didn’t plan well enough. He needed more help and better resources which should have been found before he began making the car. He also needed a lawyer to help look over and interpret all paper work.

Preston Tucker had a great idea but didn’t go about his business in the correct way, which eventually led to the downfall of his company. He wasn't successful in terms of planning. He sent out information about his product before they were even produced, this became an issue when he wasn't able to produce the cars the way that he said that he would. He also had trouble meeting the deadlines and they were always rushing at the end. Tucker was controlling in a sense that he wanted things done but he also accepted people’s idea on how to make the car better, but never let the whole idea of the car change. Tucker ran into financial trouble because of his poor planning and organizational skills, which in turn led him to the loss of the company.

In the beginning, Tucker didn't really plan out what he was going to do. He sort of improvised along the way with his company. Him and his workers were along rushing to get things done by a certain deadline. Tucker was a democratic leader because he listened to other's ideas and let them have an input in what went on. He had some legal issues in the end but that wasn't his intention and he didn't try to use fraud to get money from other companies.

He had a decentralized work environment, because mostly all of his workers were either family or friends. By doing this, he was able to let his workers sort of make their own decisions. He was also very good at marketing, because his car was famous before it was built. However, I think that he rushed everything too fast because he wasn't very organized.

In the movie, “Tucker – The Man and His Dream,” organization and communication play a key role in the movie. As more people become involved with the car, the less organized the company’s structure becomes, and as a result, workers at different levels begin making changes to the car with talking to the other departments of the business. Under the new CEO, there was more of a line structure in the company, however, I believe that either a matrix structure or team structure where different departments could work to together and be on the same page. In addition, Preston Tucker and the CEO had very different beliefs when it came to delegating authority. Tucker is a team manager who was more theory Y where he allows his employees the freedom to make changes to the car in order to improve it, and he believed in decentralization where decisions are made at a variety of levels within the company. On the other hand, the CEO was more of a traditional manager who believed in theory X and implemented centralization with in the company where all the senior managers would decide what would and wouldn’t be included in the car. Within the movie, Tucker used two separate business strategies to market his product. Overall cost leadership was used by Tucker because he was willing to sell his cars for only $1000, and Preston Tucker used differentiation by providing seat belts, rear engine, fuel injection, and other features that the big three did not offer.

I didn't think that Preston Tucker had the best managing skills. He wasn't very organized and didn't plan out his goals ahead of time. Without the organization and planning skills being used, Tucker was rushed with time and materials. One good thing about his managing style was how he was a democratic leader and always listened to his crew's thoughts and opinions. He continuously had a positive attitude and alwyas wanted to reach his goal, which helped motivate the workers.

Preston Tucker was a great visionary, but needed some help planning. Everyone loved his idea for the car, but he did not allow himself enough time to produce the prototype. He was very unorganized, and this eventually led to his downfall. The ad and idea for the car were great but the follow up was very poor.
